About the Program

This course will discuss and experiment with three forms of the ultra-short story: microfiction (under 250 words); flash fiction (under 500 words) and short-short (under 1000 words). Using examples from internet journal Night Train and print journal Quick Fiction, we’ll discover the differences and similarities between these types. We’ll also talk about the history of the form, from fables of old to vignettes to the current boom in flash fiction of all kinds. You’ll also write one story for each week (after the first) and workshop those pieces among your peers.

Please bring pencil and paper to class with you, and a willingness to discuss. Links to Night Train and copies of Quick Fiction will be provided. No raincoat required.

About the Instructor

Rusty Barnes grew up in rural northern Appalachia. He received his BA from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and his MFA from Emerson College. His fiction, poetry and nonfiction have appeared in many journals. After editing fiction for the Beacon Street Review (now Redivider) and Zoetrope All-Story Extra, he cofounded Night Train, a literary journal featured in The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and on National Public Radio. Sunnyoutside Press published a collection of his flash fiction in November 2007, Breaking it Down.
